One of the best things about visiting a barbecue competition is sampling the different types of smoked meats. In PorktoberQue’s past, we’ve taken the meats form the teams and placed them in a central location (tasting tent) for spectators to sample. We then staffed the tent with volunteers to help dish up the BBQ, and collect the votes. This was previously a fundraiser for local youth athletics, but the past year it wasn’t supported well and we decided to do away with the tasting tent.
This year spectators will go from team site to team site and sample barbecue from 2-4pm on Saturday September 30th. By eliminating the cost of the tent, tasting cups and volunteers, we have now been able to make this event at PorktoberQue FREE for spectators to enjoy. Plus, this year voting will be done at the team sites via BAMTEXT, a technology driven text-to vote system. All you need is a cell phone to cast your vote for your favorite barbecue.
PorktoberQue will be at the Houston County Farm Center September 29-October 1. Friday night will feature polka music in the Festhaus, German-style craft beer, concerts on the outside stage and lots of shopping with vendors and food trucks. Saturday we will see a car show, more polka music in the Festhaus, music on the outside stage all day long, kids entertainment, cooking competitions and more shipping and opportunities to eat wonderful food. Sunday there’s a non-denominational church service at 11, children’s entertainment, barbecue competition and polka music. Times and schedule online at porktoberque.com
Tickets are $5 per person per day (children 12 and under are free) or you can buy a weekend armband good all three days in advance for just $7. Advance armbands are only available through September 15 and can be purchased at The Thirsty Pig in downtown Dothan. Interested vendors may call 334-699-1475 for placement and avability information.
DOTHAN, AL- The 6th annual PorktoberQue has recently been named as an elite qualifier for the biggest televised cooking competition, The World Food Championships. The World Food Championships is the largest competition in Food Sport, where grand champions of previous events convene for a chance at winning the ultimate food crown and a share of hundreds of thousands of dollars in prize money. The World Food Championships is also the springboard for many up and coming culinary stars and home cooks as they seek TV fame through many well-known food shows and acting opportunities.
Now heading into its 6th season, the World Food Championships boasted the largest Food Sport tournament in history with well over 1200 contestants on 419 official teams. They came from 48 American states and 14 countries to compete, while more than 20,000 foodies watched and enjoyed the heat of the battle unfold in 10 official categories.
Since its debut in 2012, WFC has given birth to 30 TV food stars, awarded more than $1.5 million in prize money, garnered more than 5.7 billion media impressions, and connected 150+ food brands with food fans, food bloggers, and food media. In short, it has given birth to “Food Sport” by providing a level playing field, a fair judging system, a creative culinary fest, and a process that allows the culinary elite to show their chops and earn the respect they deserve.
