Kerry is an avid BBQ fan. From certified judge, promoter and backyard smoker, she loves anything to do with barbecue! Her passion is promoting two BBQ festivals in the Dothan area each year. Tri-State BBQ Festival the 2nd weekend in April, and PorktoberQue - this year on October 5-6. In her "spare" time she runs The Main Event, an event planning and marketing company in Dothan, Alabama.
It’s not too hard to learn to Polka, and you may find several people willing to teach you. At the very least, you can learn the “Chicken Dance” and get out on the dance floor at PorktoberQue. We have polka bands all three days of PorktoberQue, September 23-25 at the Houston County Farm Center in Dothan, Alabama!
PorktoberQue will be here in just a couple more days! Don’t forget, you can get your tickets at the door for $5 each (children 12 and under are free). The event is rain or shine and the polka music is INSIDE the air-conditioned building. Pets on a leash are welcome! (pick up any poopies, please!) Lots of things to do at PorktoberQue!
We have a record number of competitors at PorktoberQue this year competing in the barbecue, steak and bacon categories. Each of these three competitions is a qualifier for the World Food Championships, and the barbecue competition is also a qualifier for the American Royal, Sonny’s Smokin’ Showdown, and also a qualifying draw for the 2017 Jack Daniels Invitational.
This means that our winners from PorktoberQue can advance to much larger competitions and compete for bigger prize pools. They can advance to nationally televised competitions, and compete on a world stage with legendary cooks as part of their reward.
For example, the World Food Championships, a televised cooking competition on the Destination America station, feature over $300,000.00 in prize money. Our winners in bacon, steak and barbecue will receive a paid-for Golden Ticket because PorktoberQue is an elite qualifier. To learn more about the World Food Championships, visit www.worldfoodchampionships.com
Don’t miss the concert Saturday at 3:30 on the main outside stage at PorktoberQue, featuring Georgia native Evan Barber and his band, the Dead Gamblers. You will love their fresh Americana sound, combined with a country twang and southern roots! Take a listen to them here: http://www.evanbarber.com or read what critics have to say about them in the article below. Admission is $5 per person, and the concert is free with your paid admission. Also on Saturday, The Polka Dots play on the inside stage, the car show is from 10-3, the Reptile Discovery program is several times throughout the day, and football on the tvs in the Man Cave. PorktoberQue is at the Houston County Farm Center in Dothan, Ala. Visit www.PorktoberQue.com or call 334-699-1475 for information.
The Ultimate Air Dogs make it a regular habit to fly, leap and sail to new heights and unimaginable distances. If you’ve never seen these dogs and their humans interacting and competing in the Ultimate Air Dog Challenge, you are in luck because they are coming to Dothan September 23-25 for PorktoberQue.
Dogs are divided up into divisions according to the distance they can jump. Dogs can be any breed or mix and any size as long as they can swim. A handler will throw the toy into the pool and the dog runs and jumps to catch it. Distance is measured and awards are given. Ultimate Air Dogs has become popular because of the down to earth attitude, the grass-roots background and the ability to make every competitor feel welcome.
If you’d like to register your dog, click here- http://www.ultimateairdogs.com/event-info/2016/Dothan.php and you can sign up. If you’re not sure if your dog would like to try jumping, you can bring your dog out to PorktoberQue and they can try a few practice jumps. Just talk to the Air Dogs people on site and maybe you and your dog will have a new hobby!
The 2016 Kids Que sponsored by Academy Sports+Outdoors still has room for a few more competitions, however the deadline is fast approaching. The original deadline of September 10 was extended a week to September 17. Your child’s entry must be postmarked by September 17 or HAND DELIVERED on Monday, September 19 to 257 South Saint Andrews St. in Downtown Dothan. This is so we can get your child the necessary information and tickets they will need to compete on Saturday September 24 at PorktoberQue. If you have any questions or even want to pay with a credit card and register them over the phone call 334-699-1475
One aspect of PorktoberQue that we don’t brag about (it’s kind of bad form to brag on yourself, right?) is the charitable aspect of our festival. Thousands of dollars raised go to benefit civic and youth programs in the community. We also offer free space to numerous non-profits, churches and groups who are fund raising to support their charities.
Some of the many groups who will benefit from PorktoberQue this year are as follows:
Northview High School JR ROTC program (you’ll see them parking cars)
Taylor Mason Lodge- They are taking tickets at the gate
Northview High Girls Soccer teams- running the cornhole tournament
Blue Line Support Group- support services for Police
Chattachoochee State Park
Northview HS Boys and Girls Cross Country teams- running the People’s Choice tasting tent Saturday from 12-2. 100% of the money raised supports these teams and the cost of participating in local and regional meets
AUSA Rampage Basketball- basketball club focusing on the development of young men and athleticism
Ashford Area Chamber of Commerce
Southern Charmers pet rescue
HIPPY (programs for lower income youth to get them school-ready)
ASL- sign language programs in Dothan
Wiregrass Blues Society-keeping the blues alive in south Alabama
CHARM – Pet rescue group from Headland
Additionally, the Car Show raises thousands of dollars through registration fees and awards that as a scholarship to the Automotive Technology program at Wallace College. Literally, hundreds of kids and dozens of groups are supported through your attendance at PorktoberQue! Your $5 admission ticket plays a vital role in this effort. Thanks for supporting PorktoberQue!
We’re thrilled with this year’s T-shirts! Designed by TGICreative, these shirts will be available while supplies last at PorktoberQue at the beer stations. S-XL shirts are $12 each and XXL and XXXL shirts are $14 each. They look super sharp, and the colors just pop off the shirt! 3-Deep Screen printing in Midland City printed them for us and did a fantastic job. The front and back are shown, below.
If you want to get your shirt early and wear it to PorktoberQue, you can come by The Main Event M-F from 9-4 and we should be able to take care of you. Call us first, since some days we are out of the office getting ready for PorktoberQue! 334-699-1475
