The 2016 Kids Que sponsored by Academy Sports+Outdoors still has room for a few more competitions, however the deadline is fast approaching. The original deadline of September 10 was extended a week to September 17. Your child’s entry must be postmarked by September 17 or HAND DELIVERED on Monday, September 19 to 257 South Saint Andrews St. in Downtown Dothan. This is so we can get your child the necessary information and tickets they will need to compete on Saturday September 24 at PorktoberQue. If you have any questions or even want to pay with a credit card and register them over the phone call 334-699-1475
Originally, we thought the Cornhole tournament winners would just receive a trophy and bragging rights. However, due to the generosity of Yates Hobby Shop in Bonifay, FL the winning team will also receive a set of boards for their victory!
Check out Yates here on their Facebook page and make sure you tell them “thanks” for their kindness! https://www.facebook.com/yateshobbyshop14
You, know… besides going and having fun at a ridiculously low price enjoying music, beer, BBQ, and family fun. Why should you support PorktoberQue?
PorktoberQue is a local, Dothan event that supports the local economy. For example, most all of the vendors are local folks, and when you buy food and drinks from them, the money you spend stays here in the Wiregrass and boosts the economy. The promoter is local, and all the money made stays in the area and supports other events. The sound guy and bands are local (with one from the panhandle of Florida, so they’re local in essence) and when they get paid that money stays local to pay their bills. By spending money with our local people, it helps them to purchase local goods and services and boosts our local economy. The money’s not heading to Nashville or Atlanta or to the beach— it stays here in Dothan and helps our grocers, merchants and families in town.
Also…. PorktoberQue has given away 20 spots to non-profits to help them raise funds and awareness. This generosity helps some organizations who might not otherwise be able to afford a booth space. Plus, we are splitting the gate proceeds between the Regional Land Water Rescue group and the Farm Center. The Regional Land Water Rescue is a volunteer group that searches for missing and lost persons, and will use the funds to purchase fuel for the boats and ATV’s used in search and rescue missions, as well as supplies for such operations.
PorktoberQue is a family run, locally owned event that promotes our local economy and provides affordable family entertainment in Dothan. Your support not only allows us to continue to provide inexpensive fun in the community but helps support non-profits. Please come out to PorktoberQue and show your support for LOCAL FAMILY-ORIENTED FESTIVALS!
While you’re at PorktoberQue, if you need a small break from the music, food and shopping then head over to Victory Baptist Church’s 9-hole Putt Putt course for a free round of golf. The church brings the putters and the balls, and all you need to do is have fun!
The Pastor for Victory Baptist Church explains how it works, “I am Greg Wilmore, pastor of Victory Baptist Church located at 2284 Third Avenue Dothan, Alabama. In an effort to have a unique service to Dothan residents at local festivities in Dothan, we decided in 2012 to build our own portable putt putt course. Each of the nine holes differ in design and difficulty which makes the course a challenge for all ages.
Our course is a FREE event for kids of all ages, but donations can be made to Victory Baptist Church c/o youth fund. This event gives us the opportunity to interact with local residents and share information about our church, as well as Jesus Christ.
This is the second putt putt course I have built. The first one is at a church in Central Indiana. The concept was born out of a need for large items that can be used regularly for our church ministries. I have built other items such as a “Magic Box” large enough to make a grown man disappear, and I am currently finishing a “Military Tank” to be used as a prop for our 5 week long military themed summer Vacation Bible School. Find more information about us at www.vbcdothan.com or find us on Third Avenue one block South of the Circle behind the KFC. ”
When approached about sponsoring PorktoberQue the community minded people in charge of the locally based WDHN (ABC News 18) agreed. WDHN has also been the Back Yard Cook Off Sponsor for the Tri-State BBQ Festival, which means they support the community quite frequently through a variety of events.
WDHN will again in 2013 be a media sponsor of PorktoberQue, and is continuing their tradition of supporting the community in this fashion. If you have never been to a barbecue competition you really need to come check out PorktoberQue September 27-28, 2013. It’s sanctioned by the KCBS, which is the largest barbecue association in the world.
Many thanks to WDHN for their continued support of local events in the Wiregrass and the PorktoberQue, here in Dothan.
PorktoberQue is pleased and proud to partner with Dothan’s Hampton Inn for this year’s Judges School and barbecue competition. The folks at the Hampton Inn go out of their way to make guests happy, and they have a fantastic breakfast that is sure to please. (I can personally vouch for both of those statements as we recently held an event there and I enjoyed both the hospitality and food!)
The manager there, Sid, is great to deal with and they should be offering a special “BBQ FESTIVAL” rate. You can reach them directly at 334-761-7672
