Just emerging are a few fast-track nursing school programs, targeted at increasing RNs. These programs are one-year in length, requiring a bachelor's degree, not necessarily in healthcare related subject areas. The programs emphasize that nothing in the nursing education requirement or experience will be shortcut. Are fast-track programs an answer to what is driving the RN shortage? "Unraveling the Pulse of Modern Nursing" suggests exploring the current state of nursing and the various dynamics that shape the profession in the contemporary world. Modern nursing is a complex and ever-evolving field, influenced by numerous factors. Here are some key aspects to consider when unraveling the pulse of modern nursing:➡ Technological Advancements: Modern nursing is deeply intertwined with technology. Nurses are increasingly using electronic health records (EHRs), telemedicine, wearable devices, and other advanced tools to deliver and coordinate care. These technologies have revolutionized patient care, making it more efficient and data-driven.➡ Patient-Centered Care: There is a growing emphasis on patient-centered care in modern nursing. This approach focuses on the unique needs and preferences of patients, involving them in decision-making, and providing holistic, personalized care.➡ Interprofessional Collaboration: Nursing is no longer a solitary profession. Interprofessional collaboration between nurses, physicians, therapists, and other healthcare professionals is central to modern healthcare delivery. This collaborative approach ensures comprehensive and coordinated care for patients.➡ Education and Specialization: The educational requirements for nurses have evolved, with many pursuing advanced degrees and specializations. This has led to a more diverse nursing workforce capable of addressing a broader range of healthcare needs.➡ Crisis Response: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the resilience and adaptability of modern nursing. Nurses played a crucial role in responding to the pandemic, often working under challenging conditions and adapting to rapidly changing guidelines and protocols.➡ Mental Health and Well-Being: Modern nursing recognizes the importance of nurses' mental health and well-being. The profession is increasingly focused on reducing burnout, stress, and improving work-life balance to retain and support a healthy nursing workforce.➡ Diversity and Inclusion: Nursing is making strides in promoting diversity and inclusion. Efforts are being made to increase diversity in the nursing workforce, ensuring that it reflects the communities it serves.➡ Advocacy and Policy: Nurses are actively involved in advocacy and policy initiatives that affect healthcare delivery. ➡ Global Health Challenges: Modern nursing is influenced by global health challenges such as pandemics, climate change, and increasing healthcare disparities.➡ Continuous Learning: Nursing is a profession that requires continuous learning and adaptation."Unraveling the Pulse of Modern Nursing" involves examining how nursing has evolved in response to technological advancements, changing patient needs, interprofessional collaboration, and other key factors. It's a profession that continues to adapt and transform to meet the complex healthcare challenges of the modern world.Voice of Nursinghttps://lnkd.in/ezyGHsEn

Journal of Nursing Care Quality 38(3):p 234-242, July/September 2023. | DOI: 10.1097/NCQ.0000000000000689Summary:- Prior studies have described discharge planning and teaching as a time-consuming process for bedside nurses.3Delay ofpatient dischargedue to staffing and workload challenges can have a significant impact on patien throughput. These delays are often a result of the bedside nurse being unavailable due to other nursing care needs.- The Virtual Discharge Care (VDC) program was introduced at a 425-bed ANCC Magnet-designated acute care community hospital within a large integrated health system in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.- The VDC pilot occurred Monday through Friday between the hours of 10:00amand 5:00pm, excluding holidays. Virtual nurses reviewed daily patient census and clinical notes remotely to identify potential discharges to organize daily workflow. In preparation for VDC, the bedside nurse ensured discharge instructions were accurate, prescriptions were ordered, and home care was set up, if applicable. The bedside nurse also determined eligibility for VDC. If the patient did not meet inclusion criteria or opted out of VDC, the bedside nurse proceeded with a standard in-person discharge.- Both Patient and Staff Satisfaction increased.- Results indicate this program was effective in reducing bedside nurse workload, satisfactory for patients and nurses, and maintained quality care when compared with standard discharge. Future studies may include direct comparison of VDC with standard discharge on quality and safety outcomes.
