Your partnership with a PCP is essential to help you achieve and sustain optimal health, prevent disease by identifying risk factors and coordinate and manage chronic diseases. Your PCP serves as your first point of contact when a medical need arises. He or she provides a full range of services to monitor your health, provides recommendations for preventive care and treats any medical conditions or concerns you may have. When needed, he or she will also refer you to specialists or specialized services to ensure that you are getting the most comprehensive care possible.
There are several types of PCPs. Family medicine providers specialize in caring for people of all ages. They monitor patients’ overall health, treat common illnesses and injuries, manage chronic diseases and provide routine care. Internal medicine providers specialize in providing comprehensive medical care for adults, including managing chronic and/or complex conditions. Pediatricians manage children’s health, specializing in diagnosing and treating various ailments, tracking the child’s growth to adulthood, and providing essential services such as immunizations.
