at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD, with Pastor Steve Agan officiating. Leona Alberta Bartley was born October 12, 1915, in Davison County, South Dakota to Floyd L. and Elsie B. (Showalter) Jenks. She grew up in the Mount Vernon, Mitchell rural areas and attended country grade schools, always participating, and usually winning, in spelling contests.

graduated from Mitchell High School and from Mitchell Business College. Leona worked in various offices in Mitchell, and then moved to Ottumwa, Iowa for seven years where she was in the office of the John Deere plant. After World War II, she moved to California where her sister Viola resided. In Los Angeles, she was associated with Graff Californiawear. She alternated between secretarial and accounting duties and liked both fields.

She retired from the Personnel Department of McDonnell Douglas, Huntington Beach, in 1978. On November 17, 1951, in Yuma, Arizona, Leona married Banks C. Bartley. They made their first home in Norwalk. California and later lived in Long Beach, then Huntington Beach until 1985.

After a few years in Grand Junction, Colorado, they moved to Pierre. Lee Dean Alden from 71. City Alden NEWELL Lee Dean Alden. Newell. died Wednesday, November 21, 2007, at Rapid Regional Hospital.

Visitation will be Monday noon until 9:00 p.m. a at Kinkade Funeral Chapel and Tuesday one hour prior to the services in Newell. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 27, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. at Austin Auditorium in Newell with Rev. Harlan Robbins officiating.

Burial will follow at Hope Cemetery. Lee was born March 19. 1936, at Usta, SD. He was the youngest son of E.R. (Skip) and Eva Alden.

His family moved to Faith in 1947. He attended country and Faith schools. In 1955, he joined the Navy and was stationed in San Diego, CA, on the U.S.S. Bradford. Lee acquired many life-long friends during his time in the Navy.

Lee married Janice Foxley of Lemmon, SD, on June 8, 1958. After his discharge, they moved Frances C. Baker SCOTTSBLUFF. Neb. Frances C.

Baker, 88, Scottsbluff, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2007, at Golden Living Center in Scottsbluff. Survivors include her husband, Alex Baker; one son, Allen Baker, Wheatland, one daughter, Mary "Jeanie" Russell, Torrington, three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and nine stepgreat-grandchildren. Mina Chewning RAPID CITY Mina Chewning, 73, Rapid City, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2007, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include her husband, Gerald K. Chewning, Rapid City; two sons, Raymond Blough, Rapid City, and Stephen Blough, New Town, one daughter, Connie Batdorf, Wooster, Ohio; six grandchildren; and four South Dakota to be near family. In June 2001, they moved to Westhills Village Retirement Community in Rapid City. Leona's principal hobby was letter-writing and she carried on correspondence with former schoolmates, co-workers, neighbors and friends in areas where they had resided. Although she later used e-mail, she still preferred letters.

With her husband, she enjoyed hiking, rock hounding, and metal detecting on California's beaches. They traveled, via motor or trailer, through the Western states and into the Midwest. For several years, they assisted in the volunteer AARP-IRS Tax Aide Program, served as coaches for Senior Net computer program, and participated in some archaeological digs in South Dakota under sponsorship of SD University and Corps of Engineers. Leona was a member of First Congregational Church UCC of Rapid City. She is survived by her husband, Banks Bartley, Rapid City: stepson, James Bartley, Clover, SC; stepdaughter, Vida John, Belleville, IL; eight stepgrandchildren; and a number of nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Coral Zard, Clarice Talbot, Pearl McCormick, Viola Jenks: and brother LeRoy Jenks. and being with family and friends. He was a loving and caring husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Janice Alden. Newell; son, David (Terri) Alden, Black Hawk; daughter, Sheila (Bob) Smith. Newell; five grandchildren.

Brandon and Bryce Anderson, Sioux Falls. Brayden and Braelyn Smith, Newell, and Spencer Alden, Black Hawk; one great-granddaughter. Naphtalie Meyer, Sioux Falls; one brother, Myron (Mildred) Cochran, Oglala; and several very special nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and two brothers. Memorials have been established to the Newell Golf Club and to First Lutheran Church of Newell.

Paul S. 'Steve' Johnson RAPID CITY Paul S. Johnson, M.D.. 59. Rapid City, died November 13.

2007 at home. Steve, as he was known to his friends. was born October 31. 1948 in Norman. OK to parents Paul H.

and Margaret L. Johnson. He married Donna Dappen on Jan. 30. 1971 in Nebraska City.

NE. Steve graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1974. After completing his internal medicine residency and one year of an oncology fellowship at the University of Nebraska, he completed a combined fellowship at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. After finishing his fellowship. Steve practiced oncology at the Central Plains Clinic in Sioux Falls.

He then went into private practice as an oncologist in Omaha, NE. and was a professor in the internal medicine department at Creighton University. In the summer of 1992, he moved to Rapid City. SD. where he practiced hematology and oncology at the Rapid City Cancer Care Institute.

He retired in Jan. of 2002. He enjoyed reading, mountain biking. and hiking in the Black Hills. He also enjoyed traveling with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Donna D. Johnson: daughter, Ericka Meyer: his mother. Margaret Johnson; his brother. Martin Johnson: and his sister. Sandra Lozier.

Memorials may be sent to Donna Johnson at P.O. Box 14488. Rapid City SD, 57709- 1488. All memorials will be donated to Hospice of the Black Hills. Services are pending due to family illness.

Gary Koehn PIERRE Gary Koehn, 59, Pierre, died Tuesday, Nov. 20. 2007. at St. Mary's Transitional Care Unit in Pierre.

He served in the U.S. Navy. Survivors include his wife, Linda Hoffman, Rapid City; and two daughters, Theresa Hoffman and Cassandra Hoffman, both of Rapid City. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

HOT Rose Heavenly 22, at her Hallett SPRINGS Gladys Hallett went to join her Father on November 2007.

She died peacefully home surrounded by family. She was born on November 29, 1914 to Blanche and William Distler at Oelrichs, SD. She spent her school years in the Oelrichs vicinity and graduated from Oelrichs High School. She later attended Nettleton Commercial College in Sioux Falls and had a business degree. During her long lifetime, she worked for the local Federal Land Bank Association, the Fall River Abstract Company and the remainder of her business life was spent working for Fall River County.

Gladys worked for thirty-five years for Fall River County. During most of this time, she served Fall River and Shannon Counties as Register of Deeds. In her position as Register of Deeds she genuinely enjoyed working with the public and meeting the many individuals from both counties. Gladys married James D. Hallett.

They farmed and ranched in the Oelrichs and Smithwick area. James preceded her in death in 1966. To this union, two daughters were born. Gladys did many things during her lifetime. She did craft work all her life, embroidery, knitting, and crocheting.

She especially enjoyed traveling to such places as Hawaii, Alaska, and all over the United States. She devoted her life to her family and lived to have many grandchildren and great- Elsie Rae Mortensen WALL Elsie Rae Mortensen, age 77 of Wall, South Dakota, died November 22, 2007, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital. Elsie Rae Crown was born February 20, 1930, north of Wall, the daughter of Orrin and Maggie (Wetzel) Crown. She attended school at Wall High School. After high school she was united in marriage to Harold Marvin Mortensen on May 3, 1950.

She was em- Mortensen ployed at Golden West Telephone Company, USDA District Soil Conversation Office, Wall Lanes, and Wall and Philip Livestock Auction. She was the business manager of Wall High School for 16 years and the bookkeeper for Crown Oil for 55 years. Elsie was a member of First Lutheran Church in Wall where she was a greeter and member of the altar guild, as well as a member of the Mended Hearts Association. Elsie enjoyed spending time visiting with friends during coffee at Wall Drug. If you couldn't find her at home or Wall Drug, she was either playing cards or dominos with friends.

Elsie was very well known and always found a friend wherever she went. Her religion was very important to her. She was excited about spending eternity with God, Harold, Merle and the rest of her family in Heaven. Survivors include two sons grandchildren. Her most important role in life was to be a good and caring mother and grandmother.

Both of these obligations she utterly fulfilled. She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Schlabs, Cheyenne, WY; Mary Lou Giedd and her husband Wilbert Giedd, Hot Springs, SD; grandchildren, Wendy Cain and her husband Jeff, Rapid City: Elizabeth Martin and her husband Harrall, Wilseyville, CA; Valerie Henry and her husband Carl, Rapid City: Michael Schlabs and his wife Sherri, Cheyenne, WY; Jerry Schlabs and his wife Kim. Cheyenne, WY; James Schlabs and his wife Amber, Cheyenne, WY. She has thirteen great-grandchildren, Aaron Giedd, Heather Carlson, Kristin Sides-Giedd, Jaymz Giedd, Chonteaul Giedd, Andrew Henry, Jonathan Henry, Logan Campbell, Steven Martin, Joshua Martin, Chelsie Schlabs, Garet Schlabs, Bradie Schlabs, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her brother, John Distler and his wife Betty of Yakima, WA; two sisters, Joyce Mae Crow of Billings, MT; and Laura Cook of Ukiah, CA; and sister-in-law, Iva Hallett of Hot Springs.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sister Virginia, and one grandson, James Giedd. Services will be held 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Hot Springs. Cremation will follow and burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery at a later date. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, November 26, at First Lutheran Church, with Pastor Monty Dell officiating. Interment will be held at the Wall Cemetery.
