Abstract
For all its devastation, the First World War played a significant role in the struggle for women’s emancipation at all levels – social/moral, economic, and political. Rather than bringing the women’s movement to a halt, the war served to accelerate change by creating new opportunities. But it also intensified conflicts within the various reform campaigns under way before the war, notably in the spheres of suffrage and labour activism. The suffrage press and other organizationally-based women’s periodicals offer a compelling point of entry into feminist debates and strategies for pursuing women’s rights during the war at the national and international levels. These publications also mediated the war from women’s perspectives across the political spectrum. This chapter demonstrates why women’s periodicals constitute a significant historical resource for understanding the social and political impact of the war.
