Oklahoma native's production company receives Tony nomination for musical 'The Prom' (1)

Austin, Texas-based ATx Random Productions, which was co-founded by Oklahoma native Laura Galt, is nominated for a Tony Award for Best Musical for "The Prom."

ATx Random Productions is among several producers involved with bringing the musical-comedy to Broadway. A Bishop McGuinness graduate who grew up in Oklahoma City, Galt is CEO of the company, which she co-founded with her husband, Mike Snavely, who works as its CFO.

"The Prom," which centers on four past-their-prime Broadway stars who insert themselves into a small-town controversy making national headlines, earned seven nods when the nominees were revealed this morning for the 73rd Annual Tony Awards.

Along with Best Musical, "The Prom" is nominated twice for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical, for Caitlin Kinnunen and for Beth Leavel, who is a local favorite for her work with OKC's Lyric Theatre. "The Prom" also is nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for Brooks Ashmanskas; Best Direction of a Musical for Casey Nicholaw; Best Book of a Musical for Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin; and Best Original Score for Matthew Sklar (music) and Beguelin (lyrics).

"The Prom" also has received five Drama Desk nominations, including Outstanding Musical, and four Outer Critics Circle nominations including Outstanding New Broadway Musical.

But the Tonys are the premier awards in America theater, and they will air live on Sunday, June 9 on the CBS Television Network. Tony nominations were announced live today on “CBS This Morning” by co-host Gayle King, Emmy- and Tony Award-winning actress Bebe Neuwirth, and Emmy- and Tony Award-nominated actor Brandon Victor Dixon.

As previously reported, the musical “Hadestown” leads this year’s Tony Award nominations with 14 nods, followed by “Ain't Too Proud—The Life of the Temptations” with 12. The two shows are nominated for Best Musical along with “The Prom,” “Beetlejuice” and “Tootsie.”

Among the plays, “The Ferryman” and the popular new version of “To Kill a Mockingbird” each earned the most nominations with nine each, but the latter was surprisingly snubbed for Best Play. The Best Play contenders include “The Ferryman,” “Choir Boy,” “Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus,” “Ink” and “What the Constitution Means to Me.”

In addition, Oklahoma native Kelli O’Hara received her seventh career Tony Award nomination. She is nominated this year for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for “Kiss Me, Kate.” That’s the same category she won in 2015 for “The King & I.”

Emmy and Tony Award winner James Corden will host the 2019 Tony Awards for the second time, live from Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
